Puberty blockers and gender-affirming surgery
Recent news, research, articles, and commentary
Publicly available information about puberty blockers and surgery used for gender affirmation is widely available on the internet, and much of it is contradictory, not based on evidence, or edited to present the information in a biased way. As well, it's difficult to keep up with all the new opinions, research and data that becomes available.
The subject of gender-affirming medicine is contentious. LGB Alliance Australia has a particular perspective on it. We want to protect young gay and lesbian people from harms that might be caused by taking the wrong advice, making decisions too quickly, and not obtaining complete information.
We update the information and links here occasionally to keep it up to date. We point to some of the articles and research papers we have found interesting. You'll notice that we have some favourite writers. We don't endorse wholesale the work of individual writers, but simply record that they have asked important questions and presented information worthy of your consideration.
The entries have dates, where dates are available, so that you can judge whether the content is recent. Occasionally we have included hashtags to give an indication of subject matter.
The most recent addition to the links is news about WPATH, the association of transgender health 'professionals' in the USA. The internal papers and discussions from WPATH show that the people running the organisation don't believe it is possible for children to consent to the medical procedures the association is recommending, and that many of the recommended procedures are, at best, experimental.
