More mainstream LGBTQ+ organisations failing the LGB

Back in February we reported how ACON, Australia’s largest LGBTQ+ organisation is failing the LGB. We took a deep dive into their annual reports and did word counts for keywords such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer. The data has proven that the LGB community is not being represented adequately by ACON.

Being curious types, we’ve done the same deep dive into other major LGBTQ+ organisations annual reports and an alarming trend is very obvious. Mainstream Rainbow Organisations, (or MRO’s as we like to call them) are failing the LGB.

We want to also recognise that MANY of these organisations receive government funding that is not being used for the betterment of the LGB community.

Thorne Harbour Health is a major LGBTQ+ health service in Victoria. Here’s how they represent LGB in their annual reports. Initially they served us but notice how over time, LGB is getting less and less mention in their annual reports. We see this trend in all the MRO’s we’ve done the deep dive into except for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Congratulations to them for still representing the LGB community.

The Y axis in the charts are the number of times a word has been mentioned in an annual report. The X axis is the publication year/s of the annual report.
